Science of When Cherry Blossoms Bloom

A sure sign of spring, along with longer days and warmer temperatures, is the blooming of bright cherry blossoms en masse. Did you know that the National Park Service has been tracking peak Yoshino cherry blossom bloom dates in the Washington DC area for over 100 years? Their early bloom time is not only a sign of the changing seasons, but can also indicate changes in weather and climate in particular areas.

 

The most reliable indicator for cherry blossom blooms is a specific temperature pattern, starting in the preceding fall and winter seasons. Trees need a period of freezing temperatures to achieve dormancy, followed by a slow warming period over freezing where they can come out of dormancy. They are extremely sensitive to the rate that the temperatures climb, with warmer winters influencing an early bloom. In fact, the peak bloom time is now about 2 weeks earlier on average than just 20 years ago due to climate change and increased temperatures on the east coast. Keep an eye out and enjoy them while you can.

Pittcon 2025 Recap

Another Pittcon is in the books! During the first week of March, we traveled to Boston, MA, for an exciting opportunity to connect with industry leaders and explore the latest advancements in lab technology. The event brought together scientists, researchers, and exhibitors from around the world, sparking valuable discussions on the future of the field. We enjoyed demonstrating our products, catching up with colleagues, and exchanging ideas. We also hosted our Pipette Challenge, where participants raced to disassemble and reassemble a Transferpette® pipette—a fun and competitive highlight of the event.
